Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated in India. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Ashvin in the Hindu calendar, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October.
Dussehra celebrates the victory of good over evil in the form of the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. The story of Ramayana recounts the tale of how Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, were exiled from their kingdom by their father, King Dasharatha. During their exile, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana and taken to his kingdom of Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana, with the help of the monkey army led by Hanuman, rescued Sita and defeated Ravana in a fierce battle.
Dussehra is celebrated with great fervor and fanfare all over India. In North India, Ramlila plays are performed, which depict the story of Ramayana. Effigies of Ravana, Meghnada (Ravana's son), and Kumbhkarna (Ravana's brother) are stuffed with firecrackers and set ablaze at night in open fields. This symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
In South India, Dussehra is celebrated as Dasara. The city of Mysore in Karnataka is known for its grand Dasara celebrations. The Mysore Palace is decorated with lights and flowers, and a procession of royal elephants and floats is held through the streets.
